Dugouts

Dugouts on display at LSU's  Rural Life Center.  Dugouts were carved from sinker cypress logs.

I retrieve sinker cypress logs from the waterways of south Louisiana and carve dugouts.  I work on them at festivals and community events where  I demonstrate the tools used and give information on the history of dugouts in our state.  My dugouts range from 12 inches to 16 feet.  I have small dugouts in several Copeland Restaurants where they are used for serving food.  They are also used for paddling on rivers and lakes.  My five feet long dugout traveled with a South Arts show for four years.  It was shown in at galleries in Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida and other southern states.
