Dugouts
Dugouts on display at LSU's Rural Life Center. Dugouts were carved from sinker cypress logs.
In the past I retrieved sinker cypress logs from the waterways of south Louisiana and carved dugouts. I worked on them at festivals and community events where I demonstrated the tools used and gave information on the history of dugouts in our state. My dugouts ranged from 12 inches to 16 feet. I have small dugouts in several Copeland Restaurants where they are used for serving food. They are also used for paddling on rivers and lakes. My five feet long dugout traveled with a South Arts show for four years. It was shown in at galleries in Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida and other southern states.
