 CREOLE ROWING SKIFF

CREOLE ROWING SKIFF

The Creole rowing skiff is an old boat design from southern France.  It was an important part of transportation in Louisiana many years ago, but is rarely seen today.  The oars are elevated by a joug above the sides.  The oarsman rows facing the bow.  When asked why the oarsman faces forward, Mr Raymond Sedotal answered,"The Cajun wants to see where he is going, not where he has been!"  Only a few people build these beautiful boats today.  Many of the "master wooden boat builders" build from plans in their heads, not on paper. I learned to build the Creole rowing skifff through an apprenticeship with Mr. Raymond Sedotal.  This skiff is 16 feet long and made of sinker cypress planks from Lake Maurepas, Louisiana.

DUGOUTS

I carve dugouts from sinker cypress logs retrieved from the lakes and rivers of south Louisiana.  I use some modern tools, but most of the work is done with vintage tools such as hand and foot adzes.  Prices provided upon request. See my book below on creating a dugout.  Go to "Build it Yourself" page for prices.
